#HistoryThrowbackThursday

📌Today we're throwing it back to the earliest recorded history of 'Differentiated Instruction'. In the United States 1600s era, when one room school houses were the staple in education, one teacher was responsible for educating students in a wide range of grades and ability levels without technology.

📌As the United States education system transitioned to grading  schools, it was assumed that  all children could learn the same materials at the same pace.

📌In 1899, an educator known as Preston Search in Colorado,  worked to make it possible for  students to work at their own pace and by 1912, with the introduction  of achievement tests, there was evidence  that the gaps in children's abilities were much greater than realized.

📌When the Individuals with Disability Education Act (IDEA) was first enacted in the US in 1975, it provided guidelines for teachers to  differentiate instruction for both  general education and special  needs students. 📌If you are considering entering the field of special education, you are taking advantage of an opportunity not afforded to many people in previous generations. So let's learn from special education history and make progress into a brighter future for individuals with special needs.
