📌It's a fact that Differentiated Instruction is the process of ensuring that what a student learns, how he or she learns it, and how the student demonstrates what he or she has learned is a match for that student's readiness level, interests, and preferred mode of learning (including students with special needs).

📌This definition 👆🏾 is by Carol Ann Tomlinson, one of the champions of Differentiated Instruction. Tomlinson is an American educator, author and speaker. She is known for her work with techniques of differentiation in education.

📌Today we're throwing it back to the earliest recorded history of 'Differentiated Instruction'. In the United States 1600s era, when one room school houses were the staple in education, one teacher was responsible for educating students in a wide range of grades and ability levels without technology.

📌As the United States education system transitioned to grading  schools, it was assumed that  all children could learn the same materials at the same pace.

📌In 1899, an educator known as Preston Search in Colorado,  worked to make it possible for  students to work at their own pace and by 1912, with the introduction  of achievement tests, there was evidence  that the gaps in children's abilities were much greater than realized.

📌When the Individuals with Disability Education Act (IDEA) was first enacted in the US in 1975, it provided guidelines for teachers to  differentiate instruction for both  general education and special  needs students. 🤷What if more persons with disabilities are employed in Nigeria's Nollywood and mainstream media?

📌It would be great to see more actors with disabilities (both physical and non-physical disabilities) playing actual character roles of people who have disabilities.

📌Why should a non-disabled actor play a character with a disability in a movie when an actor living with a disability can be hired?

📌If our mainstream media improves at accepting disability as a human condition instead of a flaw and imperfection, it may encourage persons with disabilities to have great aspirations.

📌It is only right to expect that all teachers would strive to be excellent, effective educators. But then, just like in any other profession, there are those who work extremely hard at their jobs and improve on a daily basis and there are those that are just simply there never making efforts to get better. These few individuals (knowingly or unknowingly) have chosen to become ineffective as teachers.

📌How do you know an ineffective teacher?

👩‍🏫The ineffective teacher is usually nowhere in sight when students arrive.

👩‍🏫The ineffective teacher reshuffles the whole class after everyone has found a seat.

👩‍🏫The ineffective teacher grumbles about all the administrative details that must be done before class can begin or after class ends.

👩‍🏫The ineffective teacher does not know the content well enough to teach it.

👩‍🏫The ineffective teacher lacks professionalism and has a poor sense of judgement.

🇳🇬In Nigeria most schools are presently on summer holiday. Some families prefer to take a vacation trip to unwind and have a change of scene.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦For families with a child or children with special needs, taking a vacation can be overwhelming for the child and stressful for the rest of the family. Here are some tips that could help in preparing your child with special needs for a vacation:

👉🏾Create a "social story" explaining where you're going and what you'll be doing. If possible, use real photographs of the people and places. Read it together early and often.

👉🏾Talk about your plans with your child, sharing and emphasizing the positive. Keep it as simple as necessary. For example, "when we get to the beach you'll get to splash me!"

👉🏾Consider using a reward system for great behavior. For example, "If you can sit with us at the restaurant until everyone is finished, you can watch an episode of your favorite TV show."

📌The life of Marla Runyan is very inspirational. She is a highly decorated United States Olympic gold medalist who is also blind. At nine years old Runyan developed Stargardt’s Disease, a form of macular degradation, that left her legally blind. Nevertheless, she took the bull by the horns and began a lifetime hobby of running.

🏆Marla Runyan is a three-time American champion in the women’s 5000-meter run. She won four gold medals in the 1992 summer Paralympics. In the 1996 Paralympics, she won silver in the shot put and gold in the Pentathlon, which is a five-part event including fencing, shooting, riding, swimming and cross country running.

🏆One might think this was enough fame and glory for a lifetime, but Runyan continued her athletic success. She holds various American records such as:

🥇20,000 Road (2003).
🥇All-female Marathon (2002).
🥇500m (2001).
🥇Heptathlon (1996).

💡Fact: Autism spectrum disorders include people from a wide range of intellectual capacity. 📌One of the most memorable moments in the lives of expectant parents comes when they first see the image of their baby on the ultrasound screen. It’s the moment, for many, when a pregnancy really becomes real, when it finally becomes possible to grasp the fact that a new human being is developing inside the mother’s body. It’s also a moment that visually impaired or blind parents are deprived of.

📌However, technology has made it possible to create 3D printed models of an unborn child from ultrasound images so that blind parents can visualize the faces of their children in the same way they would visualize the face of anyone else, through touch.

📌It's a fact that touch is a very powerful sense for those who are visually impaired or blind and can’t rely on their eyes for information. By feeling the contours of the face, the shape of the nose and lips, a blind or visually impaired person can get a strong impression of what their unborn child looks like.
